Overweight women: do they have less life expectancy?

The middle-aged women who are overweight have nearly 80% less likely to maintain good health compared with normal weight women. This was the conclusion of recent research. A group of American researchers studied more than 17,000 nurses with an average age of 50. When the study began in 1976 all women were healthy. The researchers tracked their weight until 2000.

The results indicated that for every point increase in body mass index of these women had a 12% lower chance to get healthy until age 70 (compared with thin women). During the study not only evaluated the possibility of contracting chronic diseases. It also took into account the ability to perform everyday tasks; such is the case of making purchases, vacuuming or climbing stairs.

Experts believe that those women with a BMI between 19-25 are in a healthy state. Otherwise, those with an index of 25 to 30 are considered overweight women, those exceeding 30 points, obese. Read the rest of this entry »
